Spell It Out Challenge

This year marks my fourth year participating in the Goodreads Reading Challenge. Riding on a high from meeting and surpassing last year's reading goal of 45 books, I bumped it up ten books for 2015. In comes the new year, then BAM! I'm hit, knocked down, and run over. Every reader's nightmare, The Slump, the dreaded reading slump, pinned me down refusing to release its captive hold. Though my apartment overflows with books, the library is a half mile away from my home, and my to-be-read list is ever-growing, the slump remained constant.

As luck would have it, while perusing Goodreads a few days ago, I came across the Mocha Girls Read Book Club. The club's Spell It Out Challenge plus the awesome book I just finished, The Cure for Dreaming by Cat Winters, was just what I needed to boot me up out of the slump. Not only will this challenge shave off several titles from my TBR list, but it will also spice up and help me reach my GR goal. Out of the three challenge options, I chose Out of this world (completion of spelling “Mocha Girls” and adding the number “15”). Let the challenge begin! :-)

Out of this World Book Challenge Selections:
M - The Falconer by Elizabeth May
O - Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy by Karen Foxlee
C - Compulsion by Martina Boone
H - How Wendy Redbird Dancing Survived the Dark Ages of Nought by Lynn Fairchild Hawks
A - Crewel by Gennifer Albin

G - Betting Blind by Stephanie Guerra
I -  The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving
R - Running Barefoot by Amy Harmon
L -  Lost by LeeAnne Baker
S - The Archived by Victoria Schwab

1 - One Realm Beyond by Donita K. Paul
5 - Five Summers by Una LaMarche

Challenge Update 1/31/16

I'm a bit late on my update. Sorry. I completed the challenge, barely, but I completed it, yay! :) I finished the last book around 9:30 p.m. on December 31. Originally, my challenge selections included two classics, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Five Children and It. After thirty pages into Five Children and It, I gave up. was prepared for the archaic language and the sexism of the time, but I was not prepared to encounter a character named Jane, nicknamed P*ssy. As a result, I replaced the book with Five Summers. Also, I swapped Seraphina's Scales to The Archived because one of my former classmates was raving about it on Facebook. Since it was already on my TBR list, I thought it made perfect sense to switch books.

Outside of the Goodreads Challenge, this is the first reading challenge I've participated in as an adult. Although I didn't like all of my book choices as I thought I would, I really enjoyed this challenge.

  1. What a fun challenge! Makes me want to participate too, but I'll have to think on it for a bit since I'm terrible at keeping up with them. However, you chose really great books and I hope they will take you out of that reading slump. ;)
